about

In her early Brighton days, Jo used to hang with a young writer/performer called Jim Wood who wrote this song. Jo loved it so much she asked to play it out live (he had never recorded it) and, now several years later, this is the first official recording of this tender and enigmatic song. 'Jim' has now gone on to record under the name of 'Royce Wood Jr', with no little success, as well as forming a productive production partnership. with Jamie Woon and others. The version Jo has recorded here eschews her normal preference for choir like backing vocals and other originally envisaged production values (strings, piano?) in favour of an entirely stripped back approach, yet the song stands up perfectly, supported as it is by the tasteful playing and a peerless vocal.

lyrics

Dumb is the light on the dark
As the Angel leaves her watermark
Sweet is her rabid little spark.
Was the rain ever so sumptuous

Some night we'll get out at sea
and I can wait forever if time is all you need

Long is the grinding turn
Of a plan designed to crash and burn
Dead is the mind of the unconcerned
Because empathy is something you learn

Some night we'll get out and drive
but lonely is the road, the road that betters me

It's real peaceful
Not I won't feel deceitful
Can't wait until I next fall asleep
Cos it's the only thing thats mine to keep

Down is the new word
And it's screaming rants are shutting up
So take out a snout and spark it up
Have your favourite drink from your favourite cup
Sunlight will bizarrely shine
But I can wait forever if time is all it takes

It's real peaceful
Not I won't feel deceitful
Can't wait until I next fall asleep
Cos it's the only thing thats mine to keep
